The Tang Dao is the classic straight sword of ancient China. The sanmai forging technique is the most traditional and practical craft to make high-quality Tang Dao blades. It combines hard high-carbon steel and tough low-carbon steel to make the sword sharp, durable and unbreakable.
1. Material Preparation
We prepare three pieces of steel material. The middle layer is high carbon steel for sharp cutting edge. The two outer layers are soft low carbon steel to improve overall toughness and shock resistance. Clean all bonding surfaces and remove oil, rust and impurities.
2. Heating and Lamination
Fix three layers of steel tightly together, spread borax powder on the joint to prevent oxidation. Put the whole steel billet into charcoal furnace and heat it to high temperature until it reaches welding heat.
3. Hot Forging and Fusion
Take out the hot steel and start repeated hammer forging. Hammer evenly to make three layers completely fused into one whole steel blank. Keep heating and stretching repeatedly to eliminate gaps inside the steel.
4. Blade Shaping
Continue forging to shape the standard straight Tang Dao outline, trim blade spine, blade shoulder and blade tip. After rough shaping, conduct full annealing to soften the blade for easy grinding.
5. Clay Coating Heat Treatment
Coat special quenching clay on the blade back and body, leave the cutting edge thin-clayed. Heat the blade evenly and perform vertical water quenching. The edge becomes hard and sharp while the blade body keeps good toughness.
6. Tempering Process
Put the quenched blade into constant temperature furnace for low-temperature tempering. This step reduces internal stress, remove brittleness and stabilize blade hardness to avoid cracking in use.
7. Polishing and Finishing
Carry out coarse grinding, medium grinding and fine polishing step by step to smooth blade surface, clear forge lines and present natural steel texture. Finally do anti-rust treatment.
8. Assembly Completion
Install sword guard, wooden handle, fixing rivets and matching scabbard. After fine adjustment, a handmade sanmai laminated steel Tang Dao is fully completed.
