【T10 Steel · Hitatsura Hamon Forging Process】
This Katana is crafted from T10 high-carbon steel using the traditional Hitatsura clay tempering method. Each piece is a hand-forged work of art, balancing visual beauty with functional performance.
1. Material Selection & Shaping
• Steel Performance: Made of T10 high-carbon steel with ~1.0% carbon content. After heat treatment, the cutting edge reaches HRC 60-62 for sharpness, while the spine remains at HRC 40-45 for flexibility, achieving the ideal balance of hardness and toughness.
• Forging Process: The steel is repeatedly forged to refine grain structure and remove impurities, gradually shaped into the sword form while retaining subtle hammer marks for a unique texture.
2. Clay Application (Key to Hamon Formation)
A special clay mixture (clay + refractory clay + carbon powder) is applied using the Hitatsura method:
• A thin layer (0.1-0.3mm) covers the entire cutting edge for fast cooling during quenching.
• A thick layer (2-5mm) is applied to the spine and tang to slow cooling.
• Uniform coating from the tsuba (guard) to the kissaki (tip) ensures a continuous hamon pattern.
3. Quenching & Tempering
• Heating & Quenching: The blade is evenly heated to the austenitizing temperature (780-830℃), then quenched vertically in water. The entire edge cools rapidly, forming a continuous Hitatsura hamon extending from guard to tip.
• Tempering: After quenching, the blade is tempered at 180-250℃ for 1-2 hours to relieve internal stress, prevent brittleness, and stabilize hardness and toughness.
4. Polishing & Hamon Revealing
• The blade is ground with multiple grits of whetstones to remove scale, then hand-polished using the Hadori method to enhance contrast, creating a bright “ji” (body) and dark “ha” (edge) that clearly showcases the continuous hamon pattern.
• Final edge finishing ensures both sharpness and durability.
5. Assembly & Quality Control
• Fitted with genuine rayskin handle wrap, brass tsuba, and bamboo mekugi (pins) for a traditional, authentic build.
• Every sword undergoes hardness testing, hamon inspection, and detail checks to meet our quality standards.
